CROISSANT PARK FAMILY LITERACY

PROGRAM: Family Literacy Center

PROGRAM MISSION: Croissant Park Elementary and Florida Atlantic University, College of Education, Reading and TESOL Departments worked together to establish a Literacy Center for students and parents. It provides free academic assistance to any children who has been identified as limited English speaking. University pre-service teachers implement and reinforce assignments each week. In the fall of 2000, the program was expanded to include the parents of these children. Graduate and upper-level undergraduate students provide instruction in reading, parent workshops, technology training and parent/child field trips to promote intergenerational literacy.

SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM: The program serves families with pre-K to 3rd grade children attending Croissant Park.

FUNDING:
Grant from the Governor's Family Literacy Initiative for Florida, a program of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy and the Annenberg Challenge, with FAU and School Board funds.

ELIGIBILITY: Limited-English families with children in pre-K to 3rd grade.

FEES: The program is free.
