EACH ONE TEACH, ONE

PROGRAM: Broward County Library Learning Services: Each One, Teach One"

AGENCY: Broward County Library Learning Services

CONTACT: Janet Hansen, Literacy Coordinator, Tel: Fax: , Email: jhansen

PROGRAM MISSION: The Broward County Libraries Learning Services program is committed to serving the needs of individuals and families by creating, promoting, and implementing environments and tools which support

life long learning. It offers one-on-one adult literacy tutoring using the Laubach method for basic literacy, the Challenger Program for adult students progressing beyond basic literacy and The Kentucky GED Video Series to assist learners in obtaining their high school equivalency diploma. The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program offers basic literacy instruction to those who are not literate in their own language. Additionally, a Career & Workforce Development component is now available at the Collier City Library. Expansion and renovation plans are in progress to make the Collier City Library a "model for library literacy" which will have as its focus literacy services for adults, children and families. Supplemental learning programs beyond basic literacy are also available for all ages.

SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM: In the "Each One, Teach One" program, our adult program, literacy staff is involved with coordinating tutors and learners, designing training and learning programs and providing these trainings to the public and other agencies. An estimated 400 adult learners are being served by tutors in the program which still has a waiting list. There are always more students wanting help than available tutors.

From the very beginning, the adult learner is in charge of the learning and makes his/her own assessment of what needs to be learned. All learner information is confidential. All trainings, materials and services are offered FREE for both the learner as well as the tutor.

The Laubach Way to Reading Series is a four-book program. Tutors are asked to make a commitment of at least one year, meeting twice a week in hour and half sessions. Tutors are asked to attend an overview of the program at an Orientation workshop, which is offered twice a month - one in the afternoons and one in the evenings. After the Orientation, they are asked to attend two full days of Saturday Tutor Trainings. They will be matched with a student at the end of Day 1 of training and will return months later for Day 2. At the end of Day 2, Tutors will receive a Certificate entitling them to membership in Laubach Literacy in Action, a nationally recognized volunteer literacy program. Even if the volunteer tutor relocates, he or she will be able to join a Laubach program in their new home and continue their literacy efforts. Additionally, Laubach Literacy International offers volunteers the opportunity to tutor in other countries.

In addition to the tutor trainings, volunteers and learners (and their families) are strongly encouraged to attend additional inservice workshops offered during the year. The hard work and accomplishments of both the tutor and learner are celebrated annually at our Frederick Douglass Awards Ceremony.

FUNDING: Broward County Libraries Learning Services is funded predominately by Broward County government and is supplemented by occasional grants and the work of volunteers through the Friends of Literacy through Libraries.
