PROGRAM MISSION:
The Even Start Families For Learning Program, offered through the cooperative efforts of the Broward County Public Schools, Vocational Adult and Community Education Department and the Florida Department of Corrections, is a family literacy program that seeks to break the cycle of poverty, undereducation and recidivism. Program services are provided to inmates and their families with children from birth to age eight. Integrating early childhood education, adult literacy training, intergenerational education and parenting skills training, the educational success of families can improve student achievement.

PROGRAM SCOPE:
Eligible inmates attend Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED or Vocational training, and parenting skills training to include topics such as: life skills, developmental stages of children, discipline, career awareness, conflict mediation, and various literacy enrichment activities for parents and children. The intergenerational component allows the inmates to participate in structured literacy activities that include the parent in the early childhood development of their children despite the parent’s incarceration.

Program eligibility is determined by the Florida Department of Corrections at designated locations which include Broward Correctional Institution, the maximum security facility for women, and the Hollywood/Miami Community Correctional Center, the mens’ and womens’ work release center.

Inmates are enrolled for a minimum of 90 days in order to receive a certificate of completion for the parenting component. Inmates enrolled at the Hollywood/Miami Community Correctional Center receive GED instruction and referrals for GED testing. To date, approximately 400 hundred families have been served through the program.

FUNDING:
The program is funded by Broward County Public Schools’ Even Start grant funds from the Florida Department of Corrections, provided by the Florida Department of Education.

ELIGIBILITY:
I
nmates at Broward Correctional Institution or Miami/Hollywood Community Correctional enrolled in ABE/GED or Vocational training, whose children meet the age criteria are given priority consideration for program enrollment.
