Participants are interviewed and tested for placement into Level I, Level 2, Intermediate or the Advanced class. Morning classes run from 9:00 to 1:30 Monday through Friday. Evening classes are held from 6:00 to 9:00 Monday through Thursday. More participants attend the morning classes than the evening classes except during the summer months when the evening classes increase in popularity. Babysitting is available on site for the children of participating students. Sessions last three months in length and students receive a certificate of completion. At the end of each session, students are either retained at the same level or advanced into the next level class.

ESOL teachers for the classes are provided by Hollywood Hills Community School of Broward County Public Schools.

PROGRAM SCOPE:

There are more than 500 students enrolled in the program with 350 actively participating in the classes. Approximately 98% of the students are Spanish speaking and the other 2% speak a variety of different languages. It is estimated that the majority of students are between 30 and 50 years of age

The program is advertised via distribution of flyers through churches and other groups and through public service announcements in the press or on the radio. Many of the students hear of the program by word of mouth.

FEE
The program is offered free of charge to students.

FUNDING
The Department of Education in Tallahassee funds the literacy program.
