Your group can help literacy activities
grow in Broward County in many ways.
Invite a guest speaker from the coalition to address your
next general membership meeting. The coalition is committed to spreading the word about
the issue of literacy, and our speakers make informative, thought-provoking presentations.
Include the literacy coalition's phone numbers on
any materials you are printing or distributing. A major roadblock to literacy
progress is that many people don't know that services exist or that volunteers are needed.
The key numbers to publicize are:
Student hotline: , (First Call for Help)
Tutor hotline: (Volunteer Broward)
Take on a literacy project. Your group could conduct a
community service project that advances literacy. These can be short- or long-term. For
example, a civic group could be assigned to distribute literacy materials in an area with
high level of illiteracy.
Your group members could become literacy tutors. For a
large group, a special training session can be created to teach you how to become tutors.
Your group members could tutor in a specific location together or could join the hundreds
of volunteers already involved in literacy tutoring.
