WORKPLACE EDUCATION

PROGRAM: Workplace Education
AGENCY: Broward County Public Schools
Vocational, Adult and Community Education

CONTACT:
Neeta E. Rancourt, VACE Curriculum Specialist

PROGRAM MISSION:
Employee students receive adult education (Adult Basic Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages and/or GED), on-site at their place of employment. The curriculum is designed specifically to meet the needs of the employers and employees.

When an employer contacts the Vocational, Adult and Community Education Department, a task analysis is conducted and curriculum is devised to meet the needs of the employer. The program is most effective when the employer is willing to offer incentives for employees to attend. The most effective incentive is for an employer to pay for the time (or half time) that the employee spends in the class. Other incentives offered by employers may include motivational gifts, certificates, etc.

Time is often a major obstacle for these students as many are working two jobs in order to support themselves and their families. The benefit of holding classes on-site rather than having the students attend an adult center or community school is convenience and potentially greater chance of staying with the program.

SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM:
The Vocational, Adult and Community Education staff contact person identifies the adult center or community school who can provide the teacher for the on-site program. The program requires a minimum of 25 students per site. Since students are enrolled through the school, numbers of participants in this program are rolled up into the totals for state reporting purposes.

FUNDING:
This program is funded through Broward County Public Schools’ Workforce Development Funds.

FEES:
There are no fees to participants. The employer must provide a room conducive to learning. The staff recommends to the employer that they also provide incentives for the employees in attendance.
